Koi fish have intrigued and inspired for centuries. They have been called “living jewels” and “swimming flowers” for their physical beauty. They are also rich with symbolic significance, such as tenacity, strength, wealth, courage and good luck.
In this painting tenacity is shown as the fish are swimming upstream, against the current.
Created by dropping random splashes of red and orange ink onto a blank canvas, painting over completely with deep blue oil paint, then scraping and brushing the paint away to create the fish. In this case I added some white through the water to suggest light reflection.
