Cobblestones is a completely spontaneous work, begun with no plan, sketch or predetermined outcome. The painting simply evolved one shape and one colour at a time, allowing instinct to guide the composition.
Irregular forms gradually gather into loose bands of mint green, deep burgundy, turquoise, soft pink, yellow, lavender and dark teal, each separated by a network of pale grey lines. The result has the appearance of a colourful, abstract cobblestone surface — ordered in places, yet wonderfully unpredictable in others.
There is a gentle rhythm to the painting as the colours shift across the canvas, with the individual shapes appearing to move, cluster and change direction. Cobblestones is ultimately a celebration of working without expectation — allowing colour, shape and intuition to determine where the painting wanted to go.
