MIRAGE IN PINK AND ORANGE

This painting is part of my Mirage series, a body of work inspired by the shimmering horizons and shifting colours of the Australian landscape. Created through countless drips and layers of paint, the work evolved organically as it developed, often taking me somewhere quite different from where I first imagined.

At one stage, the painting felt complete. It was dominated by warm pinks, oranges, and violets, capturing the glow and intensity of a distant horizon. Yet I felt it needed something more. Trusting my instincts, I made the bold decision to drip vivid greens and blues across the surface—colours that, on paper, had no obvious place in the composition.

It was a risk. The painting could easily have lost its balance, but instead those cooler tones brought the work to life. The contrast created tension, depth, and visual interest, transforming the image from a simple colour study into something far more dynamic and unexpected.

As with many of my paintings, the process became a conversation between intention and intuition. Rather than forcing an outcome, I allowed the work to lead the way, responding to each layer as it emerged. The result is a painting that celebrates the beauty of colour itself—vibrant, atmospheric, and full of movement—while capturing that fleeting mirage-like quality where landscape, light, and imagination begin to merge.
